Seagrass-Watch
Seagrass meadows (veivutia) are found intertidal a Seagrass meadows (veivutia) are found intertidal and in the shallow subtidal waters of protected and soft shores throughout Fiji. They play an important role in maintaining coastal water quality and are vital in supporting coastal marine communities and maintaining diverse flora and fauna.

Six seagrass species are reported from the Fiji Islands: Halodule pinifolia, Halodule uninervis, Halophila ovalis, Halophila decipiens, Syringodium isoetifolium and Ruppia maritima.

To provide an early warning of change, long-term monitoring is conducted in Fiji, at 7 locations, as part of the Seagrass-Watch, Global Seagrass Observing Network (www.seagrasswatch.org). A decade of monitoring has shown that despite fluctuations between years, no long-term trend is evident in seagrass condition. At Natadola, a site was established in 2007, due to concerns of sewage effluent, development and land runoff. The meadow is comprised of Halodule uninervis, Halodule pinifolia and Halophila ovalis.

The Team from Marine Lab (Key Largo, Florida), in The Team from Marine Lab (Key Largo, Florida), in collaboration with Seagrass-Watch have been monitoring 3 subtidal sites in the Florida Keys since 2012.  The sites are dominated by Thalassia testudinum , Halodule wrightii  with occasional Syringodium filiforme.

The Marine Lab Team survey the 3 sites 3-4 times a year.

Halophila hawaiiana is a relatively rare subtidal Halophila hawaiiana is a relatively rare subtidal seagrass, listed as vulnerable by IUCN.  The species has a restricted distribution and is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, excluding Hawaii (Big island), making it of a higher extinction risk.

The habitat of this species has been taken over by invasive algal species in some parts of its range, resulting in declines.

It is also highly threatened by shoreline development and beach replenishment.

Halophila hawaiiana is part of the Hawaiian green turtle’s diet.

It is good to see seagrass slowly returning to the It is good to see seagrass slowly returning to the Urangan sites.  Although the meadows still remain in a POOR state.

It was great to see a large male Green sea turtle basking on the meadow at low tide.  It has been a few years since we have seen turtles at Urangan.  However, it was sad to see a large scar (possibly from a boat propeller) across the carapace.

Please remember, go slow for those below.

Don't judge a meadow by it's cover. You can't as Don't judge a meadow by it's cover.

You can't assume the importance of a seagrass meadow based on abundance alone.

Although the meadows at Burrum Heads are generally less than 10% cover, they are critical habitat for dugongs in Hervey Bay.
